So we're fresh off a flight, gone through boarder/security control with some questionable French after we've accidentally/unregrettibly had a cheeky few hours sleep on the plane ( very thankful for masks at this point lmao)
Anyway, I've stepped outside to be greeted with heat (unknown in England, where I'm from) and obviously my first thought is I'm hungry & I need to get a taxi to collect my accommodation keys. First point of advice- get an Uber because its cheaper and the drivers are nicer).
Ordered my Uber and just my luck the driver couldn't find where I was and he rang me. Hannah was not ready for this French phone call and had to try and communicate the following: 'terminal 1A opposite the exit' doesn't sound that hard right? It was for a girl that's half asleep. Long story short he found where I was and tout va bien. We had a nice convo the entire journey he was just asking me if it was my first time in France, Montpellier attractions, my studies etc & what a legend of a man, he helped correct my pronunciation, collected my keys with me and gave me his card to chat and practice more!
We've got the accommodation keys, I googled mapped how far the walk was from this accommodation agency and 10mins seemed like a cheaper and do-able option than another uber.
My phone died on me didn't it, so I just crossed over the road to this French family and asked for directions to rue du faubourg du Correau, it was pretty straight forward he just said go right and straight down. I got to the end of the street and was blessed by the nicest French woman I've met, who asked if I was ok/where I was going (very much was struggling with my luggage at this point) and she took one of my cases and walked me all the way to my accommodation and made sure I got in ok. She told me the name of a Mexican restaurant I need to try once I'm out of iso which I've already forgotten the name of, but I remember what type of restaurant it is so I'm planning on just looking for 'Restaurant mexicain' when I go exploring.
I'm quite an introverted person but when it comes to speaking a different language I always think number 1=fak it & number 2=don't really have a choice when from this point on I'm going to be living in a French country. On a more real note I realise how lucky I am that English is the international language, It's not costing me anything to at least try. If you make a mistake then you do, but you learn and improve.
If I'm going to be transparent in this blog, I'll admit to the fact that it took me a good 20mins to unlock the door. No particular reason the lock just seemed to be really hard to figure out at the time. Opened the door to my room and what am I greeted with? have a guess. is it a bird? is it a plane? No. Its a dirty ass room. I had to sweep and mop the floors, wipe down all the surfaces and wash the bedding after an already long day of travelling. Wasn't exactly happy about it. However, I can now say my room looks 10/10.
After that I had to nip to Carrefour for a food shop as I start my journey of 7-day isolation as a single-dosed gal (hoping to get my second dose here, which I can get from the 30th of august, yay :) Had no problems, it's a 5min walk from my house and I luckily met another student that I'd asked directions from. We had a brief chat and she added me on instagram, she's messaged me since offering to show me around the city!
I'm making plans for when I come out of isolation because I'm already bored and its only been 2days. Hence to why I decided to start writing my blog lol.
You know what I can't hack is people not eating until 8/9 here, I get hungry at like 5. Love listening to locals just chatting rubbish in French outside my window, makes me feel like I'm not stuck in a room by myself aha. Thinking of practicing my Chinese and watching French/chinese Netflix to kill the time.
You know what's even sadder, my one housemate that's here is moving out the day I come out of isolation and the other 3 don't move in until the end of the month so I'll have a month with an empty flat and forcing myself to go out each morning to practice and meet new peeps :)
